New Business - Chocolate Expressions
Here is a bit about them:
Please allow us to introduce ourselves and our company to you. We are Mark Miller and Eleanor “Frederica" Hall, both owners and operators of Chocolate Expressions. Together we had a vision to bring something meaningful and uplifting to the North Nashville Community. Along with that idea in mind, it gave us the enthusiasm to want to encompass the community and the surrounding area schools and universities by presenting them with the opportunity to show and receive acknowledgment for their works in our Gallery. We have a vast ambition to bring something unique and purposeful to our up and coming artist and authors of Nashville. We welcome you to Historic Germantown and the surrounding community.
You can also reach the shop at (615) 291-6561.

Come out and support Team Lederhosen
The event starts at 9:00 am and lasts till 4:00 pm (we will post Team Lederhosen's race time once we receive them)
Your fellow Germantown resident paddlers need your support - 21 of us will be braving the banks of the Cumberland to bring home paddling glory for the neighborhood. Awards will be given for team spirit and we will all hopefully be paddling so we need you to come out and yell.
Why is this important? The Nashville Dragon boat Race is a benefit for
The Cumberland River Compact - the basin's preeminent water education resource for elected officials, developers, builders, architects and engineers and other professionals. We believe that if we work in an atmosphere of open dialogue that is supported by easily understood data about our water quality, we can create imaginative solutions to new and old challenges - solutions that will work for all of us.We encourage you to join us to help speed this important work.
Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and restoration of the scenic, free-flowing rivers of our state.
What is Dragon Boat Racing? According to legend, Dragon Boat racing originated in China more than 2,000 years ago when the popular patriot and poet, Qu Yuan, felt disenfranchised by a corrupt government and drowned himself in the Mei Lo River. Upon learning of his death, people raced to the river in their fishing boats and beat the water with their oars and paddles to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body. According to one myth surrounding this sport, the dragon is said to be the most venerated of the Chinese zodiac and symbolizes control over the water.
A special thanks to Bristol Development Group for their generous donation to the cause in covering the significant cost for the Germantown boat registration.

United Methodist Church: Backpack Collection Drive
You are invited …
Without our help, many children will begin school August 13 without the basic supplies they need. For many years, the people of Monroe Street United Methodist Church in Germantown have collected backpacks bursting with notebooks, paper, pencils, and crayons so that more children could have a bright start. This year, we invite our neighbors in Germantown to join us in this important effort.
If you’re willing to help, fill a backpack or two or three with the supplies listed below and drop them off by August 19th to one of the locations below:
· Monroe Street United Methodist Church, corner of 7th and Monroe, any Sunday morning from 9 to 11
· Werthan Lofts #407, Sam Nugent, Todd Stutts
· 1320 7th Avenue North, Robert and Tina Benson
· 506 Monroe Street, Nancy Hardaway
This list of supplies was developed by a Metro 3rd grade teacher:
· backpack
· pencils- 24 count at least
· supply box, small
· spiral notebooks, 2-4
· notebook paper, 2-4 packs
· crayons, 24 count
· colored pencils
· scissors
· glue bottle
· glue sticks
· folders, 2 with prongs and pockets, 2 without prongs, but with pockets
· 1 inch 3 ring notebook
It is not essential that the packs be filled with every item on the list, but it certainly is helpful when they are.
Optional, but fun:
· small pencil sharpener, highlighters, pencil grips, ruler, markers
The packs will be delivered to the Board of Education and then distributed to schools most in need. Thank you for your help with this worthwhile cause!

More Local Favorites
Just last week my husband Jason stepped in to Angelo M Formosa's Foods (1300 4th Ave N 254-1416) to let them know about his house calls business. He found out that you can shop in there as well!
So, I got my big radio flyer wagon and walked right down the alley. You need to arrive M-F before 12 noon because I think they close the gates after that. This is a warehouse that ships to the grocery stores (kind of like the Floral Shop). I got 3 pineapples, half a dozen apples, a bunch of celery, 2 avocados, an onion, and I think one more thing for under $15 dollars! And...they were the best tasting pineapples and avocados I've ever had!
So another local place besides farmer's markets to get fresh fruits and veggies. Family owned and have been in business for a long time...They will also do a veggie or fruit gift basket if needed (not sure of the cost on that one). So check it out on the corner of 4th and Monroe...we were very happy with the fruits and veggies there. Ask for Pam if she's there...she was very helpful and wonderful. They were so tickled that I came with my wagon that they asked to take a picture to put on their wall! Great little place right in our neighborhood that I've driven by forever and never knew what was inside

Car Crimes
Nancy Hardway wrote to let us know about an incident on Monroe St.:
My nephew Michael Bridges' Camero was stolen last night about 10:30 or 11:00, over on 4th. He had just come home, and was in the process of unloading his car, and "poof" it was gone. He did not leave the keys in it. The police did not get there for some time because of the crowd downtown. Hopefully, this was just a "4th of July thing", and is not indicative of things to come...
Anthony Cherry's truck (on 5th Ave) was broken into this week.

One Neighbor's Favorite Local Shops
These are things I would like to share with others in the neighborhood that I think make our neighborhood and its environs a nicer place to live. As I find out about new, additional shopping opportunities I will send them along to share.
- "Lazzaroli's" is now open on the 1300 block of 5th Avenue - selling homemade Raviolis, fresh pasta noodles & sauces, cheeses, olive oils and pre-made pasta meals to go that just need to popped into the oven or microwave for dinner. Hours : 10 am until 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Another chance to eat local!
- Fans of "Fire Finch" in Hillsboro Village - a chic, fun, art, clothing, housewares, jewelry, Nashvillian-owned shopping experience - will be very happy to know they are opening a new store downtown on the corner of 3rd and Church the week after 4th of July week...they will carry even more home decorating items in the new store including Jonathan Adler! More information to come.
- Did you know that you can buy fresh flowers 6 days a week from our local floral wholesaler on 3rd Ave? All you have to do is tell them you live in the neighborhood and they will sell to you...they have fantastic choices, many walk-in coolers and are open until noon on Saturday. Prices are the best. "Metro Floral Wholesale", 1119 3rd Avenue North.
- "Christie Cookies" - 1205 3rd Avenue North - now sells retail out of their corporate headquarters - you
can just walk into their lobby and purchase a selection of cookies and brownies between 9am and 4pm weekdays. The brownies heated in the microwave or oven with a scoop of ice cream is fantastic!- If you love coffee and dream of the day when we will have our own little coffee corner here in Germantown then this might interest you. "The Standard" (of the restaurant The Standard) has opened a "cafe" at 162 8th Avenue North (inside the MadMod building). Free easy parking on both sides of the building, hours are great - 7am until 3pm Monday thru Saturday..they have regular coffee, expresso and
its many variations, pastries, salads, sandwiches, hot & cold teas, etc... very artistic tables & chairs, seating outside in nice
weather, await you! We have been a few times and the coffee is delicious, the service fast and again keeps it local! It's also a
nice walk on Saturday morning. Thanks Teresa Blackburn, World Shopper

Keep an Eye Out Against Crime
A gold or bronze Yukon has been spotted circling our neighborhood at odd hours. It is pulling a black trailer behind the vehicle with a water tank on it. In the wee hours of the morning (4am), this vehicle has been shining a red light into windows to detect activity. They could be planning a break-in or could be stealing your water for their business. If you see this vehicle, call the police immediately.
Several break-ins have occurred on 6th Avenue involving cars. Not only have they stolen what was loose in the car, but have done significant damage to the cars beyond breaking windows. Protect your vehicles.
The police want us to know that there is a drug shortage in Nashville, driving up crime for more money to buy what drugs are available. Therefore, if you mix in the new construction, cars parked on the side of the road already broken into, you have a perfect opportunity for more serious break-ins and robbery.
Please be aware, alert and call the police when you are suspicion of anything. It is good for all of us to be protective of our community.

We put a new roof on it 6 mos. ago, it has a paved back patio, is entirely fenced and is painted in designer colors. We are willing to include all appliances (washer/dryer, stove, microwave, dishwasher) and would be willing to make a deal for the bbq grill and patio furniture. Reminder: Clean up after your dog!
Simply cleaning up after your dog in public places and on private property not only helps keep areas clean and hygienic, failure to do so leaves a mess for someone else to clean up, or step in!and
Health concerns are also a big motivation to clean up after your dog. There are many parasites that can be transmitted to humans via dog feces (roundworms, tapeworms, etc.). Other pathogens that can be transmitted to humans via dog feces include strains of the bacteria E. coli, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, and Listeria, to name just a few.

Litter Patrol
The neighborhood needs a chairperson for the Clean-up & Litter Control Committee. If you can help your neighbors by
- co-ordinating a few neighborhood clean-up days
- managing clean-up volunteers
- keeping an eye on neighborhood litter
please let us know!
If you're not the co-ordinating type, think about what you can do to improve the appearance of the neighborhood as you're out, walking around, enjoying the Spring weather: keep a bag with you for stashing unsightly litter and tossing it away in the corner trash cans.

Pizza (and More) Delivery to Germantown
From Kim Unertl:
We recently tried out My Dad's Pizza after reading about it in a Salemtown blog. Their menu includes pizzas, subs, wings, and Middle Eastern specialities. One of the owners made the delivery himself - he and his brother own the restaurant and they've been open since last June. Both the pizza and the Middle Eastern dish we tried out were tasty, and it was nice to find someplace this good that delivers to our area. Thanks to Salemtown Mike for posting about this!Do you know of other restaurants that deliver to Germantown that we should mention here? Let me know!

6th Annual Crawfish Boil
Yep, It's that time again! The 6th Annual Crawfish Boil will be happening Saturday, May 5th (what better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than with crawfish and beer?), starting at 2pm. Come and go as you please. Eat and drink as you please. Besides the regular fare, we'll also have red beans and rice, snacks and desserts. Some come, enjoy, sit back, relax and let the good times roll!
What: 6th Annual Crawfish Boil
Where: 1323 3rd Avenue North; Germantown (backyard and deck...might spill out into the street)
When: Saturday, May 5th, starting at 2pm, ending at ???
Mark your calendars, and see you there!!!
A bit o Cajun humor to get you going:
Boudreaux and Thibodeaux were once again spending Saturday night at the City Bar, and after several hours of steady drinking, Thibodeaux suddenly fell backwards off of the bar stool and onto the floor, passed out cold. Boudreaux looks at Thib, looks up at the bartender, and remarks, "Dat's what I like about Thibodeaux. He knows when he done had enough to drink."

Reminder: Don't Forget Your Friends with Foliage
New Additions to our Arboretum
As you know, with thanks to the Arboretum committee, Historic Germantown has thirty-six new trees this year. But, this season, they need water more than ever! This is especially true because these past winter months have been officially declared the driest in a century.
Please Water the Trees
Walking about the neighborhood, you will see fourteen new flowering YoshinoCherries. Also, the Maples are sending out leaf buds and the Crepe Myrtles will come along soon.
All those trees need a good long drink on a regular basis. So, if there is a tree in front of your home, please take a moment to give it some water and keep the neighborhood green!

Richland Creek Run, April 7
Attached you will find the News Release for the Richland Creek Run planned for April 7, 2007, and organized by the Sylvan Park, Cheokee Park, and Richland West End neighborhood associations. The event will be a Celebrate Nashvile event, held in conjunction with the Mayor's Walk on the Richland Creek Greenway that day. The Mayor is also the start official for the race.
Runners Mark Your Calendars:
Inaugural Richland Creek Run Set for April 7, 2007
A five-mile timed and measured run through the new Richland Creek Greenway and Sylvan Park neighborhood is scheduled for April 7, 2007. This inaugural race will celebrate the Richland Creek Greenway and provide participants with the opportunity to preview the newest segment of the Greenway, which will officially open later this year. Net proceeds from this Celebrate Nashville event will benefit Greenways for Nashville, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the creation, protection, preservation, and promotion of Nashville greenways.
The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. outside of the Cohn Adult Learning Center, 4805 Park Avenue, and will wind through parts of Sylvan Park neighborhood before heading onto the Richland Creek Greenway and finishing back at Cohn. Mayor Bill Purcell will be the official race starter.
St. Thomas Hospital, The Wilson Group, Vanderbilt University and Montgomery Bell Academy are primary sponsors of the Richland Creek Run, which is being organized by the Sylvan Park, Cherokee Park and Richland-West End Neighborhood Associations. The race’s media sponsors are the Nashville Scene, Lightning 100, and Team Green.
The Richland Creek Run is one of the few five-mile events in the middle Tennessee area. The run will be an excellent pre-Country Music Marathon training event.
“The neighborhoods’ involvement in organizing the Richland Creek Run demonstrates the enthusiasm and anticipation the community has for this new greenway,” said Jane Laub, Coordinator for Greenways for Nashville, “and we hope to see the Run become an annual event and fundraiser for GFN.” Greenways for Nashville works in partnership with the Metro Parks Greenways Commission and is a member organization raising awareness of and support for the Nashville greenways initiative.
Participants can register in advance online at www.active.com or by completing and mailing a registration form downloaded from www.richlandcreekrun.com. Pre-registration is $17, and Race-day registration is $25. T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered participants.
"We are very fortunate to have a community asset like the Richland Creek Greenway, and we want to encourage runners from across the city to come share in our celebration as we near the opening of the next phase of the city's greenway system," said race-committee chair Jason Holleman. "I think that everyone who comes out for this event will find that a tremendous effort has been made by a dedicated coalition of area neighborhood associations, local schools and businesses, and individual volunteers."
The Richland Creek Greenway's first segment opened to the public in the fall of 2005. The second and largest segment of the Richland Creek Greenway is scheduled to be completed by early summer 2007. The Greenway will connect the neighborhoods of Sylvan Park and Cherokee Park with the schools and businesses along White Bridge Road. This 2.5 mile greenway provides a scenic, natural experience in the midst of a bustling community.
For additional information about the Richland Creek Run, visit www.richlandcreekrun.com or contact Jason Holleman at 269-6365. For additional information about Greenways for Nashville, contact Jane Laub at 862-8400 or visit www.greenwaysfornashville.org.

Report Any Crime You See!
- Life-or-death Emergency: dial 911
- Non-Emergency Police: 862-8600
In the past month, neighbors have observed two incidents of theft (from a car and from a home) and one incident of lewd activity (in a parked vehicle) in and around Germantown, but all went unreported to the police.
Officer Chris Locke with the Nashville Police emphasized to the board at our last meeting the importance of reporting all incidents of crime to the police as soon as possible. He reminded us that the Nashville Police track patterns of crime across the Metro area and allocate resources on that basis.
So, if we don't report crimes when they happen in our neighborhood, we won't get the police presence that we need, so don't hesitate to dial 862-8600 when you've witnessed a crime!
