Metro Offers E-Mail Reminders for Brush Customers

New Maps, Schedules for Alley Cleaning, Street Sweeping, Mowing and Litter Pick-up Also Added to Public Works Website

Davidson County residents can sign up to receive e-mail reminders about when brush collection trucks will be in their neighborhoods, thanks to a new website feature now offered by Metro Public Works (MPW).
New and updated information for Metro's street sweeping, alley and other public right-of-way cleaning services is also now available.
"These latest updates to our streets and roadway maintenance program are just in time for Spring and the increased outdoor activities that start as the weather begins to get warmer. It's another way we try to provide the best customer service possible to Metro taxpayers while fulfilling our responsibilities to keep the streets clean and safe."
- Public Works Director Billy Lynch

Through the combined efforts of Public Works crews and employees of Storm Reconstruction Services (SRS), Inc., Metro residents can have their brush, leaves, small limbs and other yard waste picked up five times a year. A map of the 12 brush routes and scheduled pick-up dates is posted, and now residents can sign up to receive an e-mail reminder when brush trucks will begin collecting on their route. Just click on the "sign-up for e-mail notification" link now displayed on each route description. If you're unsure what your brush route is, call 880-1000.

There are a few simple guidelines to remember when setting out brush and leaves for Metro collection, including:

* Brush needs to be out by the first specified day the trucks are scheduled to be in the area.
* Place all brush where your garbage is collected (at the curb or in the alley).
* Limbs should be no larger than 4 inches in diameter.

All guidelines for brush collection services are available on the Public Works website. Brush pick-up is provided for residents only and not commercial entities, such as for-hire landscaping or tree-trimming companies. Any business or individual paid by a homeowner to remove limbs or trees from private property is responsible for disposing of these items, and can be cited for placing them on a street, median or other public right-of-way. Metro crews routinely mow, pick up litter and clean alleys on a route system, and the new routes and scheduled dates for 2006 are now posted on MPW's website, along with - for the first time ever -- Metro's street sweeping schedule. Go to the streets page, then click on "Maintenance Route Schedules."

The new route maps were created to encompass the boundaries of more than 300 organized neighborhood groups identified by the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhoods.

"Our intent is to have better coordination of what Public Works crews are doing with neighborhood clean-ups and other volunteer activities that residents want to organize in their communities."
- Veronica Frazier (executive director of Metro Beautification and Environment)

For more information about services provided by Public Works, call 862-8750.

Seeking "Das Germantown Kochbuch"

Kay Poole recently found a "Best of the Best from Tennessee Cookbook" that had a reference to a "Das Germantown Kochbuch" that was published in 1980 by our two historic churches. It was written by Evelyn Kempson and Edythe Connelly. Of course, it's now out of print and can't be found on the usual online bookstores. Anyone that has or knows where to get a copy of this book, please contact Kay (KMP704@aol.com).

Road Work--Take care where you park

W.L. Hailey Construction Company has informed the neighborhood of the upcoming paving project to smooth the roadways disturbed by the recent water line work. Milling will begin Monday March 6, 2006, with paving to follow. Work will begin at 8th and Buchanan (Salemtown), proceed toward 5th, south on 5th to Madison, continuing on Madison in both directions until completion. All paving should be completed in the Germantown area within two (or so) weeks. On most days, work will start between 7 and 8 AM and continue until 5 PM. Use your judgment in parking on the street around these times; provided that if your car is left on the street during milling or paving operations on your street, the contractor may attempt to knock on your door or may tow the vehicle -- no parking notices have been posted and will continue to be posted during the project.
