Come out and support Team Lederhosen

Nashville Dragon Boat Races are this Saturday August 25th at Riverfront Park
The event starts at 9:00 am and lasts till 4:00 pm (we will post Team Lederhosen's race time once we receive them)
Your fellow Germantown resident paddlers need your support - 21 of us will be braving the banks of the Cumberland to bring home paddling glory for the neighborhood. Awards will be given for team spirit and we will all hopefully be paddling so we need you to come out and yell.

Why is this important? The Nashville Dragon boat Race is a benefit for
The Cumberland River Compact - the basin's preeminent water education resource for elected officials, developers, builders, architects and engineers and other professionals. We believe that if we work in an atmosphere of open dialogue that is supported by easily understood data about our water quality, we can create imaginative solutions to new and old challenges - solutions that will work for all of us.We encourage you to join us to help speed this important work.

Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and restoration of the scenic, free-flowing rivers of our state.

What is Dragon Boat Racing? According to legend, Dragon Boat racing originated in China more than 2,000 years ago when the popular patriot and poet, Qu Yuan, felt disenfranchised by a corrupt government and drowned himself in the Mei Lo River. Upon learning of his death, people raced to the river in their fishing boats and beat the water with their oars and paddles to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body. According to one myth surrounding this sport, the dragon is said to be the most venerated of the Chinese zodiac and symbolizes control over the water.

A special thanks to Bristol Development Group for their generous donation to the cause in covering the significant cost for the Germantown boat registration.

United Methodist Church: Backpack Collection Drive

In Tennessee, 291,000 children live in poverty. Tennessee ranks 47th among the states in the well being of children.

You are invited …

Without our help, many children will begin school August 13 without the basic supplies they need. For many years, the people of Monroe Street United Methodist Church in Germantown have collected backpacks bursting with notebooks, paper, pencils, and crayons so that more children could have a bright start. This year, we invite our neighbors in Germantown to join us in this important effort.

If you’re willing to help, fill a backpack or two or three with the supplies listed below and drop them off by August 19th to one of the locations below:
· Monroe Street United Methodist Church, corner of 7th and Monroe, any Sunday morning from 9 to 11
· Werthan Lofts #407, Sam Nugent, Todd Stutts
· 1320 7th Avenue North, Robert and Tina Benson
· 506 Monroe Street, Nancy Hardaway

This list of supplies was developed by a Metro 3rd grade teacher:
· backpack
· pencils- 24 count at least
· supply box, small
· spiral notebooks, 2-4
· notebook paper, 2-4 packs
· crayons, 24 count
· colored pencils
· scissors
· glue bottle
· glue sticks
· folders, 2 with prongs and pockets, 2 without prongs, but with pockets
· 1 inch 3 ring notebook

It is not essential that the packs be filled with every item on the list, but it certainly is helpful when they are.

Optional, but fun:
· small pencil sharpener, highlighters, pencil grips, ruler, markers

The packs will be delivered to the Board of Education and then distributed to schools most in need. Thank you for your help with this worthwhile cause!
